Frequently Asked Questions

Manic Training program is a High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) developed to improve athleticism for  people wishing to live and compete in an active lifestyle, to be “Ready For Life”, and what life throws at you. The strength and conditioning aspects of many sports have been aligned to bring challenging, beneficial workouts.

The programming is designed to increase strength, power, work capacity and durability for real world challenges, through purposeful variety. These sessions use full body workouts and compound movements utilizing free weights, medicine balls, sandbags,  Kettlebells, Airdyne bikes, rowers, Ski Ergs, ropes, push sleds and many bodyweight exercises… in many different formats, across all planes of motion.

The sessions are intense and challenging to everyone on many levels.  Manic Training brings programmed sessions into a hybrid style of training.  The Manic goal is to program workouts that challenge and benefit you in all aspects of athleticism for long term goals and improvement, to make you feel better, to  perform better, to be stronger from the core out, and to make you look better naked!!

The programming is designed to be performed 3 times per week with a day of rest in between, a day of rest from Manic that is. On your days off from Manic you should get out and do what you love to do, such as an extended bike ride, cardio exercise, a hike, walk the dog or simply enjoy the day off.

Manic Training’s program is designed such that Monday/Tuesday are the same workout, Wednesday/Thursday are the same workout, and Friday/Saturday are the same workout. The program is designed for you to attend one class in each set of days.

IT’S FUN! ...as fun as anything this challenging can be! “It’s the best hour of my day” is a frequent quote from our members. The Manic Training system doesn't seek to “make you jacked,” turn you into a “gym rat” or any of the common gym stereotypes. The idea of “READY FOR LIFE” is that Manic seeks to make you mentally and physically stronger for every aspect of your daily life. Whether you are a gold medal athlete, a 9-5’er, a weekend warrior, or a parent/grandparent, Manic will prepare you for whatever life throws at you and whatever you throw back at it.

This system can help you further your athletic endeavors, it can help you keep up your energy through the workdays, make you stronger so that you can play hard with your children, etc.

Manic is never a workout with just one discipline. Each workout consists of a variety of exercises that work various parts of the body in a multitude of ways. With an emphasis on core and cardio strength, the program certainly speaks to our slogan of “READY FOR LIFE.” High intensity interval training has been proven in studies to increase longevity rates, increase muscle gain, increase weight loss, and sharpen your mental acuity. For one hour, your mind is fully engaged with your body, living in the moment, training in the moment, as you pour all of your physical and mental focus towards the task at hand. Nothing else matters, you don’t find yourself thinking about work, chores, or any outside stresses. http://www.fitdeskjockey.com/hiit-versus-endurance-running Use your Manic Training routine to better your health over time. For some people, this may include a goal of reducing conventional pharmaceutical use for ailments such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, depression, bloating, and stress by lessening or ridding your body of these conditions, one of the benefits of high intensity interval training. High intensity interval training has been shown to significantly increase production of Testosterone, Human Growth Hormone (HGH), and significantly increase the performance of your body’s immune system.

Each and every Manic class starts on time and ends on time. You are expected to show up prior to the start of the workout to briefly stretch or roll out and be ready to go the moment the class begins. All workouts have elements of strength, cardio, agility, and endurance training, which utilize cross-body movements, and all planes of motion. Manic Training workouts are the quintessential core workout which speaks to our goal of being READY FOR LIFE. After each workout you are provided with the opportunity to cool down, stretch, or roll out. Manic Training workouts will significantly boost your caloric afterburn which aids in muscle recovery and weight loss (explained in the following article). Various studies have repeatedly confirmed these findings. In one such instance, “Researchers at the 2007 annual meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine reported that subjects that performed HIIT burned 10% more calories in the 24 hours following activity.”

Manic workouts incorporate functional movements across all planes of motion with weights and exercises appropriate to your individual ability.  We work from the core out working  across the body in all motions.  Every Manic workout focuses on the key components of fitness - strength, endurance, flexibility and balance.

Some other gym's popular workouts are as short as 12 -25 minutes long, others vary with work and intensity.

While the emphasis varies, every Manic workout includes a strength and endurance, aerobic and anaerobic component. Manic workouts are always an hour long, with a ten minute warm up, 5 minute instruction, and approximately 45 minute workout incorporating a purposeful variety of exercises working through and across the entire body, making you stronger from the core, out.

Manic’s emphasis is on personal achievement, from a motivational environment of fellow Manic members working alongside each other. Manic does not establish weight or time goals, rather in each Manic class you challenge yourself both physically and mentally and motivate others, instead of competing against others. Such competitiveness can lead to more frequent injuries as people push themselves beyond their acceptable limits. With a focus on form, a non-competitive stance and a steadfast emphasis on safety, Manic Training is a program that will yield impressive whole body results for years to come.

Many people are  making the switch to Manic Training, finding a challenging  program  in a safe environment, and encourages them to pursue their personal goals.

Great things have been done by other programs, and now Manic Training is taking it to another level doing great things better...making you READY FOR LIFE.

With such a functional workout available for all abilities, Manic Training is just the place to get started on your way to being READY FOR LIFE!

Yes, if you have the ambition and will power to work hard to change your life and your body, you can do Manic.

Yes, of course this a question that you must address first and foremost with your physician, and secondly, with your Manic instructor. There are a multitude of ways to ease in to the Manic Training program and modify exercises as needed during this time. We have multiple people with joint replacements or major past injuries and/or trauma who have had phenomenal results with Manic and continue to work out to this day.

Not only can you do it...you SHOULD do it. High Intensity Interval Training has been shown to be one of the best ways for seniors to reverse bone density loss or maintain healthy bone density. Manic helps strengthen your fast-twitch muscles which your body utilizes to help prevent slips and falls, as well as helping to increase your overall longevity. “Once you hit the age of 30, you enter what's called "somatopause," at which point your levels of human growth hormone (HGH) begin to drop off quite dramatically. This decline of HGH is part of what drives your aging process, so maintaining your HGH levels gets increasingly important with age. HIIT boosts your body's natural production of HGH, which will help address the muscle loss and atrophy that typically occurs with aging. While HIIT may seem too advanced for the elderly, don't let the intensity dissuade you! Rest assured you can perform HIIT at ANY age! For further information, see this article.

Most people know after the first class if they’ll ever come back. We want to give you the opportunity to try one full week before having to commit.

No. The only contract you may want to enter into is “auto-pay” by the month, which gives you a discount. This is not a binding contract. See pricing details at your local Manic Training facility’s website.

Manic’s philosophy is simple, “We don’t want your money unless you are going to work out.” Typical gym business models are built on maximum memberships, with minimum participation. At Manic, we want participating members, as we want to see your results, we want to see you “READY FOR LIFE.”

You need to show up 15-20 minutes before your first class, to fill out the Participant agreement form, and Client questionnaire. You will want to have good sturdy sneakers/footwear, minimalist shoes are fine. For men, a comfortable workout shirt and flexible shorts with proper man support. Women will want a comfortable workout shirt, sports bra, and comfortable flexible bottoms.

This will vary from person to person, but you should generally intake some form of complex carbohydrates and proteins. A light meal or hearty snack with sufficient initial digestion time before a workout will usually suffice. More importantly is what you replenish your body with after your workout. Stick to proteins such as nuts, fish, and plant proteins while avoiding most sugars. Avoid all sugars for a period of two hours after a workout since sugar is known to stop the production of HGH. However, after two hours, fruits with sugars such as bananas, blueberries, or tart cherries are known to have multiple post-workout recovery benefits.

Consider consulting a nutritionist to formulate a proper diet to meet your personal needs.

No leave that to us. You simply need the motivation, and willingness to give your maximum effort to get into better shape. If it was easy we’d call it Liposuction, or Gastric-Bypass.

-We love the community of Manic people we have become part of. Many people find themselves attending the same Manic classes each week. As a result you often work out with many of the same people. Over the days, weeks, and months you all have the unique opportunity to develop a camaraderie, encourage each other, and relish in each person’s successes. New friendships become commonplace, and frequently carry over into everyday life, outside of the Manic gym setting.

-Our program is a BS free experience, starting on time and ending on time, with no tolerance for interruptions, distractions, or slackers.

-You don’t think about anything except what you are doing...totally living in the moment, its a one hour vacation for your brain from your everyday stresses.

-Motivation from the folks working out right alongside you.

-Your results & seeing others results from when they first start (especially friends).

-Our instructors, keeping you safe and in proper form.

-Most of all, it is FUN! For many people, it becomes highly addictive! (How often can you call an addiction a great thing!?!)

You do not need to be consistently working out before starting at Manic. With several different levels of Manic Training workouts, there are programs to match every fitness level. Working out is always a positive move, but nothing will prepare you for Manic like actually doing Manic. If you want to use “I need to work out before I start Manic” or “I’m not in shape for Manic” as an excuse, then perhaps Manic isn't for you.

Yelling is NEVER an acceptable part of a Manic Training program. There are many ways to motivate or encourage someone without ever having to yell, or be “in their face.” The only time anyone will be yelled at or called out is if they are disrupting the instructor or the class, or are putting themselves or someone else in physical jeopardy.

Have you ever heard the term “No Pain - No Gain”? The soreness that is experienced after workouts is simply indicative of intense muscle use, and the subsequent rebuilding and strengthening of one’s muscles. This is an imperative part of the recovery and strengthening of one’s muscles. It is also an essential part of reaching the next plateau and eventually breaking through to the next level. The level of soreness can be managed by the amount of weight you use, or the level of intensity that you perform at during the class. It can also be managed by proper nutrition. This condition is frequently referred to as DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness).

NO mirrors and NO egos! There is plenty of time to check out your results in front of a mirror in the comfort of your own home. When at Manic, you are there to work out and get the full benefit of the workout without worrying about how you look or how others look.

Since your instructor is always in the class and keeping an eye on everyone’s form, there is never a need for anybody to check a mirror.

With your brain so actively engaged in the intervals of physical exertion and concentration, you pay virtually no attention to others, and they do the same to you. Part of Manic’s allure is that it not only strengthens your body, but it strengthens your mind by forcing you to concentrate all of your mental energy on the task at hand, and not pay any attention to what or how others are doing nearby. That being said, you may pace yourself with others working out around you. This is the motivational aspect of Manic, because it is highly unlikely that you’d keep up the same intensity level should you be working out by yourself.

Manic offers you the ability to totally focus inwardly and mentally challenge yourself without any pressure from others. That being said, it is wholly acceptable to motivate yourself by pacing yourself off of other classmates or by picking up heavier weights in line with other people.

This is a question for your instructor. Manic is a non competitive workout program. That being said, you will always be able to find somebody who is more than willing to compete alongside or against you as a form of motivation during the workout. Competition is derived from working out with like-minded individuals, willing to push each others limits, while working out alongside each other. Motivation is the Manic Training way, and competition within this program is simply a byproduct of motivation meant for like-minded individuals. It won’t take long for you to recognize others that are up for a challenge. Likewise, these individuals will quickly seek you out for a challenge as well.

You may be working out next to someone who is been doing Manic for 2 years and using much heavier weights than you. You will not compete with this person, yet you will find it motivating to see them working just as hard as you.

You may develop a competitive nature in Manic but it is not something we teach nor strive for. The competitive nature that you may develop is simply a byproduct of your desire to constantly strive to become better than you have been. You can be competitive without there being “winners” or “losers”. You can also be competitive against yourself.

Example: 5 minutes on a rowing machine, one person rows 1510 meters. Next round, someone else rows 1535 meters. With 1535 being the new record, you may strive to reach or better that mark. Whether you reach it or not you do not win or lose, as it is simply a goal to strive for, not a mark to reach to win.

Friendly-motivational competition can foster healthy workouts, but we don’t accept the egos that say “I’m bigger, better, faster, stronger than you,” period!

While all these classes can be doing the same routine, the intensity can be changed depending upon class demographics, and through such means as varying music, number of reps/rounds, and periods of rest.

MANIC TRAINING - our most common workout, for those seeking to substantially increase their physical and mental fitness.

MANIC LITE - for those seeking to build a physical fitness foundation prior to taking on the full Manic Training workouts. This may also be a great workout for somebody coming off an injury or illness.

MANIC WEIGHT LOSS - for those seeking to lose a significant amount of weight.

MANIC TRAINING EXP - for those who possess a high level of physical and mental fitness and are familiar with most Manic exercises and are seeking to push themselves at a consistently higher level than ever. (This class will begin at each location at a later date, once fitness levels and exercise familiarity have substantially increased).

Many Manic participants develop an overall tendency to lead a healthier lifestyle (eating, regular exercise ((not necessarily manic)), have more awareness of bad habits, and tend to be able to regulate stress levels.

On a day to day basis, many people notice a substantial increase in their core strength. Whether you are utilizing better posture at your work station, or are able to carry both of your kids at the same time, or are finding improvements in your other athletic endeavors, it is all in line with Manic’s READY FOR LIFE mantra.
